Health of Body We often don't think of health of body as part of God's sacred design for our lives, but it truly is. Most of us are familiar with the scriptural references to our bodies as “temples,” but beyond that symbolic meaning is something very profound and practical. First, if we are not feeling well, it can have a negative effect on all aspects of our lives. It can affect our prayer life, our family life, our work life, our emotional life, and our spiritual life. Second, if we are physically sound it often means we have found a healthy balance in our lives with eating habits, exercise, and prayer. We are eating the right things, at the right times, in the right quantities as well as being prayerful every day. Third, treating our bodies as temples also has a virtuous component. It also means respecting our intimate lives and our sexuality. It means respecting the bodies of others as well. Finally, there will be a day when our bodies will fail us due to injury, illness, or old age. While we are healthy enough to do so we must show charity to the injured, the sick, and the elderly. Health of body is a blessing that God bestows on us so we can do His will here on earth. |
