On October 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II issued an Apostolic Letter entitled The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, encouraging all Catholics to recite the Rosary. He also suggested five new Mysteries that might supplement the meditation on the traditional Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.

The new Mysteries, i.e., mysteries of Light or the Luminous Mysteries, are intended to offer contemplation of important parts of Christ's Public Life in addition to the contemplation on His Childhood, His Sufferings, and His Risen Life offered by the traditional Mysteries.
